Museu de Favela- Rio

Museu de Favela- Rio

In Cantagalo-Pavão-Pavãozinho-
The Favela Museum isn't simply a gallery inside the favela the favela itself is the museum.
So vived and pulsating with life, the small city is a living canvas painted by generations of residents.
The first time I came to Cantagalo, Sidney 'Tartaruga' Silva (President of the Corpo Movimento Academy of Capoeira in Cantagalo and lifetime resident of the neighborhood) walked me through the community center where children study languages, dance, play instruments and capoeira, where I played against the most amazingly acrobatic youngsters.
There's also a boxing ring, a swimming pool and a library up there. You sense that the community center is its own utopia, where kids are at least temporarily distracted from the surrounding socio-economic drama.
What I noticed was that the children in Cantagalo seem to be more open to (and have been more exposed to) international culture, than children in some other favelas. Maybe because of a strong influence of caring international volunteers who pass through, or from generally a stronger base education.
